It was a warm, sunny day when a resident of Vineland, New Jersey, came across a heartbreaking sight while driving—a group of five bald, frail-looking puppies huddled together on the side of the road.
This kind-hearted individual couldn’t simply drive past and decided to stop and help.
Without hesitation, they contacted the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter in Vineland. The shelter quickly dispatched an animal control officer to the scene.
Upon seeing the puppies’ critical condition, the officer made the call to take them directly to a veterinarian instead of bringing them to the shelter first.

After receiving immediate medical attention, the veterinarian determined that the puppies were suffering from severe mange, eye infections, swollen feet, and open sores covering their fragile bodies.
In addition to these painful conditions, the puppies were extremely emaciated, clear evidence of prolonged neglect before being heartlessly abandoned on the street.
Once stabilized, they were transferred to the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter. Given their fragile health and complex needs, the staff and volunteers at the shelter faced a challenging road ahead in nursing these little ones back to health.
Despite their dire condition, these puppies never lost their joyful spirits. They greeted their rescuers with wagging tails, bright eyes, and affectionate kisses, as if to say thank you for the care and kindness they were finally receiving.
“They were all very sweet on intake, even with the condition that they were in,” Kathleen Leary, director of operations for the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter, told The Dodo. “They were wagging their tails and licking our faces.”
Their resilience and gentle nature touched the hearts of everyone involved in their care. It was clear that these little fighters had an incredible spirit—one that would carry them through their recovery and onto brighter, happier lives.

The shelter staff estimated that the five puppies were around five and a half months old. Due to their poor condition, it was difficult to determine their exact breed, but they suspected the pups were some mix of Mastiff and Cane Corso.
Despite their rough start in life, the dedicated team at the shelter ensured the puppies received everything they needed—consistent medical care, nourishing food, and plenty of love and attention. No detail was overlooked in their recovery journey, and every effort was made to give these little fighters the best possible chance at a happy, healthy future.
“They are on antibiotics, eye meds, and medicated baths and will be rechecked weekly by our veterinarian,” Leary explained.
As the puppies began to heal and their fur started growing back, their playful personalities started to shine through. It was then that the shelter team decided it was time to give them names. Inspired by their resilient spirit, they named the pups after beloved Super Mario characters: Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Princess Peach.
With their health improving and their spirits lifted, these little heroes were finally ready for the next chapter of their lives. The shelter proudly announced on its official Facebook page that the puppies had found a loving foster home where they were thriving.
“Their little personalities are [slowly] coming out, they all seem to be good with other dogs and love people,” Leary shared.

It took some time for the right adopters to come forward, but good things come to those who wait. And wait they did—until, finally, each brave pup found a loving forever home.

The only one who faced a bump in the road was Luigi. Unfortunately, he didn’t quite get along with the other dogs in his first adoptive family, and he had to be returned to the shelter.
But fate had other plans for Luigi. It wasn’t long before a woman reached out to the shelter, sharing that her son had fallen in love with Luigi at first sight.
