Bald And Very Sick, But Full Of Life

On a bright, sunny day in Vineland, New Jersey, a local resident was driving when they came across a heartbreaking sight—five tiny, sickly puppies, bald and frail, huddled together on the side of the road.
Unable to ignore their suffering, the Good Samaritan stopped immediately to help.
They contacted the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter in Vineland, which quickly dispatched an animal control officer to rescue the puppies. Seeing the severity of their condition, the officer rushed them straight to a veterinarian instead of taking them to the shelter.

After receiving medical care, the vet determined that the puppies were suffering from mange, eye infections, swollen feet, and open sores covering their fragile bodies.
In addition to their severe health issues, they were dangerously emaciated—clear signs of neglect before being abandoned on the street.
Once stabilized, they were taken to the shelter, where staff and volunteers faced the enormous task of nursing them back to health.
Despite their suffering, the puppies never lost their spirit. They showered their rescuers with kisses, their tails wagging in gratitude for the kindness they had finally received.
“They were all very sweet on intake, even with the condition that they were in,” Kathleen Leary, director of operations for the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter, told The Dodo. “They were wagging their tails and licking our faces.”
Everyone who cared for the puppies was touched by their resilience and affectionate nature. Despite everything they had endured, their unbreakable spirit shone through, giving their caregivers hope that they would recover and thrive in their new lives.

The shelter determined that the five puppies were about five and a half months old. Because of their poor condition, it was difficult to identify their breed, but they were believed to be a Mastiff-Cane Corso mix.
Despite everything they had been through, the dedicated staff made sure the puppies received the best care possible, providing them with ongoing treatment and attention.
“They are on antibiotics, eye meds, and medicated baths and will be rechecked weekly by our veterinarian,” Kathleen Leary explained.
As the puppies healed and their fur grew back, they finally began to look like the strong, beautiful dogs they were meant to be. To celebrate their recovery, the shelter staff gave them names inspired by Super Mario characters—Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Princess Peach.
Once they were both physically and emotionally ready, the shelter proudly announced on Facebook that the puppies had found a foster home where they were thriving.
“Their little personalities are [slowly] coming out, they all seem to be good with other dogs and love people,” Leary shared.

It took some time for adopters to come forward, but patience paid off, and eventually, each of these resilient dogs found a family to call their own.
However, Luigi faced a small setback. He struggled to get along with the other dogs in his new home, leading to his unfortunate return to the shelter.
But fate had other plans. Not long after, a woman reached out, sharing that her son had fallen in love with Luigi at first sight.
The heartwarming photo of the two together says it all—Luigi had finally found the family he was meant to be with, a home where he was truly loved and cherished.
