Karla Swindle has always had a deep love for animals, a passion that led her to establish S & K Quarter Horses Farm in Fayette, Alabama. There, she dedicated herself to caring for horses and other animals, forming strong bonds with them over the years.
Her time working with animals has brought both joy and heartbreak, but one story stands out above the rest.
In March, a 22-year-old mare gave birth to a foal—a moment that should have been a beautiful chapter in the cycle of life. However, just seven days later, tragedy struck. The mare fell gravely ill and passed away, leaving her newborn foal orphaned far too soon.
It seemed like a heartbreaking tragedy—the young foal, lost and grieving, had no one to guide or comfort him in his first days of life.
But just when all hope appeared lost, love and support arrived from the most unexpected source.

After the mare’s passing, Karla Swindle made it a priority to stay with the orphaned foal, offering him as much comfort and support as she could during those difficult first nights.
But she wasn’t alone. That night, her dog, Zip, followed her into the barn—and to her surprise, he refused to leave. Instead, he curled up beside the foal, later named Tye, as if determined to stay by his side.
“He was whining,” Swindle recalled. “You could tell that Zip knew something was wrong that night.”
Zip sensed Tye’s heartbreak and instinctively stepped in to provide the companionship and warmth he so desperately needed. As Karla watched the tender scene unfold, she was overwhelmed with emotion, moved to tears by the pure and unexpected bond forming before her eyes.
But that night was only the beginning. For the next six weeks, Zip never left Tye’s side, standing as a loyal guardian and friend—a love more powerful than words could ever express.

“Every time I headed to the barn, Zip would race ahead, straight to the stall, and wait for me to arrive,” Swindle recalled. “He always got there before I did.”
His dedication was unwavering—Zip wasn’t just keeping Tye company; he had taken on the role of a true protector, making sure the orphaned foal never felt alone.
“As soon as I opened the door, he would nearly knock me down trying to get inside,” Swindle added. “If the foal was lying down, Zip would go over and rest his head on him.”
It was more than just companionship—Zip had become Tye’s source of comfort, a silent promise that he was never alone.
And truly, whenever Zip was near, Tye seemed at peace. The loyal dog became a soothing presence, a balm for the foal’s wounded heart, filling the void left by his mother’s loss.

After a few months, Tye blossomed into a strong, healthy horse, leaving behind the heartbreak of his early days. He gained weight, grew beautifully, and found his place in the world.
Through it all, Zip watched with quiet pride—his role as Tye’s adoptive dad had been the foundation of the foal’s recovery.
As Tye matured, their paths naturally began to diverge. Now, he spends most of his time with his older sister, learning how to navigate life as a horse. But the bond he shares with Zip, the dog who once saved him with love, will never be forgotten.
