When Jessica Kupsik, a dog trainer from Chicago, Illinois, heard Francine’s story, she was instantly drawn to her. The local rescue group, Dark Horse Dogs, reached out to see if she’d be willing to foster the tiny pup, and she couldn’t resist.
“I think mangy and deaf were the two selling points for me,” Jessica told GeoBeats Animals.
From the moment they met, Francine and Jessica formed an unbreakable bond. Despite her challenges, Francine was anything but ordinary. Her vibrant personality shone through, defying every expectation tied to her initial condition.

Kona, Jessica’s other dog, welcomed Francine as her playful, wiggly little sister—one who never stopped zooming around the house or making high-pitched noises to express herself.

She proved to be a fast learner, mastering hand signals with ease. But some things—like her obsession with leaping on and off furniture just for fun—were beyond even Jessica’s training expertise!
“As a dog trainer, I’d normally say you shouldn’t encourage that—it’s not ideal. But you can tell Francine is having the time of her life. She’ll jump on the couch and then throw herself off again, just for fun,” Jessica said.

When Francine was finally ready for adoption, Jessica realized she couldn’t let her go. The thought of saying goodbye was unbearable, and just like that, Francine became a beloved foster fail!
“I vowed to never adopt one of my foster dogs, but then this mischievous, deaf bowling ball was found in the garbage and plowed her way into my life—to test my patience as a dog guardian and my skill as a dog trainer,” Jessica shared on Instagram.
