Many dogs never experience the freedom of a backyard or the warmth of cuddling with their favorite human. Instead, they spend their entire lives chained, missing out on the comfort of a loving home.
Meet Max, the tiny black pup who’s exhibit A.
He’s spent his entire life isolated from his family, living under a broken sofa and sleeping on cardboard. Not once has Max known the comfort of a warm, cozy home.

When Andrea Peralta, a dedicated rescuer with Animal Defenders, saw Max in such heartbreaking conditions, she immediately approached his owners to learn more about his situation.
Max’s family revealed that he had struggled with health issues his entire life, and his owner was considering putting him to sleep.
Andrea knew time was running out for the tiny pup, so she didn’t hesitate. She asked the owner to surrender Max to the rescue, and thankfully, he agreed.

Andrea took Max to the rescue facility, where he underwent a thorough examination. Along with severe skin issues, he was covered in ticks, plagued by parasites, and losing fur constantly.
During the vet visits, Max was shy and withdrawn, clearly frightened from a lifetime without proper socialization. But Andrea was determined to help him. From that moment on, his life took an unexpected turn for the better!
The Road To Recovery

During his first few weeks at the shelter, Max showed little improvement. He refused food and water, appearing deeply depressed and withdrawn.
A follow-up checkup revealed the cause—liver and pancreas issues, likely the result of improper care from his previous owner.
“They discovered that he was developing liver and pancreas problems so he had to be hospitalized again. This is because her previous family used Ivermectin to treat her skin issues and this could cause such damage to such a young puppy,” the AD team wrote on Instagram.

To manage his health issues, Max needed a specially designed feeding plan with food formulated for liver support. Thankfully, a compassionate community quickly stepped up, donating funds to ensure he received the care he needed around the clock.
After just a month, Max was unrecognizable. He had gained healthy weight and completely come out of his shell, no longer the shadow of his former self.
“He’s got a whole life ahead of him to be happy and healthy—something he’s never truly experienced,” his rescuers shared on Instagram.

Max finally ventured into the backyard. At first, he just stood quietly in the corner, watching his furry friends play. But then, everything changed.
Within days, Max found the courage to join in—and he didn’t hold back! He blossomed into the sweetest lovebug, embracing life like never before.
Now, Max is ready for adoption. And when the right moment comes, we’re absolutely pawsitive he’ll find a loving home and a family who will cherish him unconditionally. He truly deserves it!
