The issue of overcrowded shelters, abandoned dogs, and strays is not new—it’s an ongoing reality. Sadly, some shelters face such severe challenges that their euthanasia rates approach 100%.
However, there are still inspiring individuals and organizations dedicated to preventing the worst-case scenario, often working with minimal resources.
A standout example is Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), a shelter in Austin, Texas, that has achieved an impressive 97% save rate over the years.
Among their many success stories is that of an abandoned pregnant dog, cruelly kicked by her owner when she needed help the most. Despite the challenges and high costs, the shelter’s dedicated team went above and beyond to give her a second chance and bring joy back into her life.
Couldn’t Even Walk

A dog named Meter Maid was rescued by animal control in an Austin, Texas neighborhood before being taken to the city shelter. Given her advanced pregnancy, the shelter reached out to Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) for help, and the team immediately stepped in.
Once transferred to APA!, they did everything possible to ensure her comfort. However, Meter Maid remained scared and sorrowful. On top of that, she was so heavily pregnant that walking became nearly impossible for her.
Despite the challenges, the shelter staff refused to give up on Meter Maid. Understanding the importance of fresh air and sunshine for every dog, they gently transported her outside in a wagon each day.
Beyond caring for her physical well-being, they also surrounded her with love and kindness, helping her heal emotionally and feel safe again.

“Our teams showed her all the love as she began to warm up,” an APA! spokesperson told Newsweek.
Little by little, her wounds—both physical and emotional—began to heal. And soon, the moment every mother longs for was finally approaching.

After 16 days of round-the-clock care, the moment everyone had been waiting for finally arrived. Overjoyed, the shelter staff couldn’t help but share the news with their followers on Instagram.
“☀️ This #AmplifyAustinDay, the sun is shining on the best mama dog: Meter Maid, who just gave birth to 11 puppies!” they wrote.
The staff was stunned by the whopping 11 puppies, which explained why Meter Maid had one of the biggest bellies they had ever seen. Despite the surprise, they were thrilled for the new canine family and worked tirelessly to ensure the puppies had the best start in life.
They also shared a video of Meter Maid’s journey on TikTok, where it quickly gained attention. People were overjoyed by her happy ending, celebrating the love and care that turned her story around.
The shelter staff gave the puppies names that perfectly matched their mother’s theme: Parallel Park, Speed Limit, Parking Ticket, Street Parking, Stop Sign, Sidewalk, Construction Zone, Detour, Valet, Driveway, and Crosswalk.
The APA! team expects the puppies to be available for adoption in about a month, with their mother following a week or two later. They remain hopeful that each one will find a loving, responsible home—one where they will never experience betrayal again.
More than anything, we hope this story serves as a reminder of the consequences of irresponsible actions while also inspiring kindhearted people to continue helping animals in need.
