Vilo, a K-9 with the Orem Police Department, is retiring after years of exceptional service. A German Shepherd-Malinois mix, he spent three years by the side of his handler, Quentin. Now, the time has come for them to part ways as Vilo steps into retirement.
Quentin And Vilo Had A Rough Start
Quentin wasn’t Vilo’s first handler—the two had only been partners for three years. But their first meeting wasn’t exactly smooth.
“When I picked him up, he growled at me the entire ride home,” Quentin recalls.
Vilo struggled to adjust to a new handler, but neither he nor Quentin knew that they were about to form an unbreakable bond.
After A While, A Lifetime Bond Had Been Created

It didn’t take long for Quentin and Vilo to connect. As dedicated police officers, they both followed a strict, well-structured daily routine.
With each assignment, their bond grew stronger, and before long, they became inseparable.
“He ends up becoming your brother and your partner,” Quentin says.
Vilo proved to be an outstanding police dog, with years of experience in tracking and apprehending felons. His sharp instincts and exceptional trainability were invaluable to Quentin time and time again.
Vilo Had Some “Life-And-Death” Moments

There were moments when Vilo walked a fine line between life and death. Some assignments were incredibly dangerous, requiring him to pursue armed criminals or secure high-risk areas before an arrest.
“It’s a really heavy decision that you have to make… You put complete trust in him, and he trusts you. It’s something you can’t truly understand unless you’ve been through it,” Quentin shares.
Fortunately, both Vilo and Quentin made it through their years of service without serious injuries. Vilo retired with an impeccable record, earning the admiration of his fellow officers, who gave him a well-deserved send-off to honor his service.
He Got An Emotional Radio-Call From His Colleagues
Vilo received his final send-off over the police radio, sitting in a patrol car beside his partner.
For Quentin, it was an emotional moment—his colleagues had prepared a heartfelt message that deeply resonated with him. And while Vilo couldn’t understand the exact words, he quickly picked up on his partner’s emotions.
“You deserve a well-earned rest. Thank you for keeping your handlers safe throughout your career and bringing them home each and every day. You’ll be missed, K-9 Vilo 1042.”
It was a farewell fitting for a hero.
