Before becoming beloved residents at the Naperville Area Humane Society (NAHS), Major, a 3-year-old dog, and his brother Hilo were housed at a local shelter in Quincy, Illinois.

Tragically, if not for timely intervention, both dogs would have faced euthanasia.

Despite their challenging start, Major and Hilo quickly became shelter favorites, charming everyone with their playful personalities and friendly nature. Known for their quirky spirits and love for games, they brought joy to staff, volunteers, and visitors alike.

Recently, the NAHS team shared a heartfelt video featuring Major and Hilo, showcasing their lovable temperaments and highlighting their best qualities.

This weekend marks their 365th day at NAHS, and we can’t understand why they’re still here. So, we created this video with our staff and volunteers—the people who know them best—to share all the wonderful things these two have to offer,” the team shared.

Overlooked Without A Valid Reason

No one at the shelter could understand why potential adopters kept overlooking Major. He had no reason not to be chosen! Beyond being an incredibly friendly and lovable dog, Major was also well-mannered and easy to care for—a perfect companion in every way.

Winston, a volunteer at NAHS, shared, “Don’t tell the other dogs—he’s the smartest one here!”

Jane, another volunteer, added, “He’s such a lovebug, and everyone at the shelter wants him to have his own family.”

And Pam summed it up perfectly: “Major is the sweetest little boy.”

It was a Wednesday—exactly 372 days since Major first arrived at the shelter—when a man walked through the doors.

Jose, a semi-trailer truck driver who had recently lost his beloved furry companion, was ready to open his heart to another dog.

The staff at NAHS knew exactly who to introduce him to: Major.

From the very first meeting, there was an instant connection. The two clicked effortlessly, and after just a short introduction, it was clear—Major had found his person, and Jose had found his new best friend.

The shelter staff organized an unexpected yet deeply emotional farewell for their beloved long-time resident.

One by one, Major had the chance to say goodbye to all his favorite volunteers, sharing tail wags, hugs, and heartfelt moments with each of them.

When the final goodbye was said, Major eagerly jumped into Jose’s truck, his tail wagging and eyes shining with excitement.

It was an incredibly heartwarming sight to see Major snuggled up next to Jose through the truck window. His eyes were calm, his tail gently wagging, and he radiated pure contentment.

For the first time in a long while, Major looked completely at peace, knowing he was finally where he belonged—in the arms of his forever dad.

And that smile—oh, that smile! It was the kind of pawdorable sight that could melt even the coldest of hearts.

Though Major’s address is no longer in Naperville, Illinois, he couldn’t be happier to embark on new adventures with his dad by his side!

“We just heard from Major’s new dad that Major is doing GREAT! He can now jump out of the truck all by himself and absolutely LOVES snuggling up with his new owner at night in the cabin. We’re so thrilled to hear that Major is enjoying his exciting life on the road,” the NAHS team shared.

Major is truly living life to the fullest, turning every day into a new adventure. And, most importantly—he never stops smiling!
