Becoming a police dog is an honorable role that demands extensive training and unwavering dedication. To join the ranks of “paw enforcement,” puppies must successfully graduate from the police dog academy and learn the skills needed to take on even the toughest criminals.
In 2016, Gavel, a six-week-old German Shepherd puppy, was among 40 police puppies training in Queensland, Australia.
Hailing from a distinguished lineage of working police dogs, Gavel was expected to have a promising career with the Queensland Dog Squad, catching criminals and keeping the streets safe.
But life took an unexpected turn. Gavel had a natural talent—not for patrols, but for cuddles and affection.
Although he didn’t make it through the police academy, Gavel found an even better role that allowed him to embrace his true personality and live his best life.

In April 2016, Gavel arrived at the Government House in Queensland as a hopeful police dog in training. His stay was meant to last 12 months, during which he would prepare to join the elite Queensland Police Service Dog Squad.
During his time there, Gavel underwent basic obedience training and was even presented with a formal uniform adorned with the Queensland Police Service insignia.
However, it soon became clear that something was amiss.
Gavel had a clear preference for pats over patrols and a love for treats that outweighed his interest in chasing down criminals.
After a year at the Government House, Gavel’s police handlers delivered their verdict: he “did not display the necessary aptitude for a life on the front line.”
Despite this, Gavel had won over the hearts of everyone at the Government House, becoming a cherished member of the family. Fortunately, the Governor decided to adopt him and give him a new role perfectly suited to his friendly nature.
In February 2017, a special position was created, and Gavel was officially appointed as Queensland’s first Vice-Regal Dog.
In a truly adorable moment, he even “pawed” his own contract!

Gavel’s new role involved supporting the Governor, the Honorable Paul de Jersey, in fulfilling a range of important constitutional, ceremonial, and community duties. His responsibilities included greeting guests, leading tours, attending formal ceremonies, and, most importantly, being irresistibly adorable.
On special occasions, Gavel dons a custom-made ceremonial coat, proudly showcasing the state emblems of Queensland, making him a distinguished and lovable representative of the Government House.

In fact, during his time as Queensland’s official Vice-Regal Dog, Gavel outgrew four ceremonial coats. The earlier versions even included the insignia of the Queensland Police Service, reflecting his unique journey from aspiring police pup to a distinguished symbol of the Government House.

This lovable pup has not only captured the hearts of everyone at the Government House but has also shown that there’s more than one path to success.
Gavel’s journey reminds us all that sometimes failure is just a stepping stone to finding where we truly belong.
Living his best life at one of Brisbane’s most prestigious addresses, Gavel continues to serve with pride, donning the symbols of the State he represents so well.
Gavel wasn’t just Queensland’s first Vice-Regal Dog; he also became the star of an illustrated children’s book. The story beautifully captures his journey of self-discovery, showcasing how he found his true place in the world and embraced his ultimate purpose.
In late October 2021, the official Instagram account of the Governor of Queensland announced that Gavel, the German Shepherd, had officially retired after an impressive 40 (canine) years of service. He hung up his ceremonial coat, marking the end of a remarkable chapter in his life.

Throughout his service, Gavel was showered with love and affection, not only from His Excellency and Mrs. de Jersey but also from his handler and lifelong companion, who continues to care for him in retirement.
Gavel captured the hearts of everyone he met. Though his career as a police dog didn’t pan out, he excelled in his vice-regal duties, performing them with grace and charm. He made an unforgettable impression by warmly welcoming visitors and putting them at ease.
For those wondering if Gavel still resides at the Government House estate in Brisbane—yes, he does! He’s now enjoying a well-deserved retirement filled with the love, treats, and pats he adores so much.
