Rescues become much more challenging during the winter when cold temperatures make it harder to save animals. Many are fearful of human contact and choose to endure the freezing conditions rather than accept help.
This story follows a group of rescuers who received an alert about an animal trapped in the snow and quickly sprang into action to save it.
What Could It Be

As two men were driving down the road, they noticed something unusual in the snow. A faint movement caught their attention, but they couldn’t make out what it was. Curious and concerned, they pulled over, stepped out of their car, and cautiously approached the spot where they had seen the mysterious figure.
To their surprise, they found a dog buried in the snow, trying to create a small nest for warmth. Unfortunately, the poor pup didn’t realize that his efforts wouldn’t be enough to keep him safe from the freezing cold.
Concerned for his well-being, the drivers immediately contacted Steinbach Area Animal Rescue. Without hesitation, the rescue team responded, ready to help this sweet dog find safety and warmth.

One thing they noticed was that the dog’s fur was severely matted, which may have actually helped her survive in the freezing cold by providing some insulation.
Despite their gentle efforts to encourage her to move, the dog refused to budge. Understanding her exhaustion and fear, the rescuers came up with a solution—they carefully placed her on a tarp and used it to slide her through the snow and into their vehicle.
Once she was safely inside, they turned on the heater to warm her up and rushed to a clinic to ensure she was in stable condition.

At the clinic, the veterinarians examined the dog and informed Michelle, one of the rescuers, that she had a fever and was severely dehydrated. Despite her condition, they were relieved to report that she would recover with proper care.
Since she was timid and nervous, the veterinarians decided to sedate her to safely remove her excessive, matted fur. Once it was gone, she seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, as if a weight had been lifted. Now, with her fresh new look, she was absolutely adorable.
During her stay at the shelter, she formed a special bond with Graham—the first person she truly connected with. The feeling was mutual, and Graham knew he couldn’t leave without her. Without hesitation, he decided to adopt her.
Now named Winnie, she quickly adapted to her new home. She met several other dogs and fit right in, forming instant friendships. It was clear that she had finally found the warm, loving family she deserved.

Graham took Winnie to a pet store, where they picked out a cozy new jacket just for her. Knowing how much she had struggled in the cold, he wanted to make sure she stayed warm and comfortable.
Now, everything was different. Winnie no longer feared the snow—she embraced it, happily playing with her new dog siblings. In such a short time, she had transformed completely, from a timid, freezing pup to a joyful, energetic dog.
With a loving owner and a warm, safe home, Winnie’s life had changed forever. She was finally where she belonged, surrounded by care, companionship, and endless love.
