Dogs bring immense joy to our lives, making it hard to believe how some people can be so cruel to these helpless animals. Yet, despite their loyalty and love, neglect, abuse, and abandonment still occur daily.
The team at Animal Haven, a New York animal shelter, encounters heartbreaking cases daily, but nothing could have prepared them for what they were about to witness.
Two young girls discovered an abandoned dog under the Manhattan Bridge and rushed him to the shelter. When the staff saw him, they were stunned.
Severely emaciated and in such critical condition, they feared he might not survive. Yet, they were determined to do everything in their power to give this helpless pup the happy ending he deserved.

Before bringing him to the animal shelter, the two kind-hearted girls gently wrapped the dog in warm blankets, showing that compassion still exists in the world. Their actions proved that there are people with big hearts, always ready to help those in need.
But beyond that, they could do no more. The staff and volunteers at Animal Haven took over his care, ensuring he was in safe hands.
“So we brought him inside,” Nicole Chan, Animal Haven’s director of marketing and communications, told The Dodo. “We first put him on the floor, and as we looked at him, you could see the heartbreak on everyone’s faces.”
Despite being nothing more than skin and bones, Timmie—the name given to the dog—managed to take a few steps. The rescue center staff was both surprised and relieved. It was a small but powerful sign that Timmie wasn’t ready to give up without a fight.
Still, they wasted no time and rushed Timmie to an emergency vet. As expected, the doctors confirmed what they already feared—Timmie was in extremely poor condition.
In addition to his severe emaciation, the vets discovered something even more heartbreaking. “Some of the numerous wounds on his skin strongly suggested abuse—consistent with cigarette burns,” they determined.
As if that weren’t enough, Timmie was also diagnosed with pneumonia, Animal Haven shared in a Facebook post.

Given his fragile condition, the veterinarians quickly informed the shelter staff that Timmie would need an extended stay in the hospital.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Timmie slowly but surely began to recover. His journey to healing was made possible by dedicated veterinarians, shelter staff who visited him daily, and the kindhearted people who donated to support his treatment.
Thanks to all these compassionate souls, brighter days were finally on the horizon for Timmie.
New Beginning

Timmie spent 36 days in the hospital before he was finally strong enough to be discharged. While his journey to full recovery was far from over, he had taken a crucial first step.
Once out of the hospital, Timmie returned to the shelter, where the staff welcomed him with open arms. But his stay there was brief—his story was about to take another hopeful turn.
According to Animal Haven’s Facebook post, they received an overwhelming number of foster offers for Timmie. With so many kind-hearted people eager to help, they quickly found him the perfect temporary home.

“Allison came out of the woods,” Nicole said. “We were just like, ‘We hope this is a foster fail’!”
At first, no one knew exactly how things would unfold, but everything seemed to be leading toward the happiest ending. In no time, Allison and Timmie formed an unbreakable bond and became inseparable.
“Right away, he would not leave my side,” Allison shared. “Anytime I sat on the couch, he’d jump up and be right next to me.”

Timmie’s health improved faster than anyone expected, but even more remarkable was his emotional recovery. Despite the hardships he had endured, he rediscovered his joy, radiating warmth and positivity.
At last, nearly every piece of his life had fallen into place.

After several weeks with his foster mom, Timmie finally received the best news of all—he was officially a “foster fail.”
“After three weeks of having him, I couldn’t imagine bringing him back and letting someone else adopt him,” Allison said. “It was like, ‘OK, this makes sense. This works.’”
On adoption day, Allison decided to take Timmie back to the place where his journey began. When they arrived at Animal Haven, the staff was overjoyed to see him again. It was a full-circle moment—one that marked the beginning of his new, happy life.
