From the moment she met his gentle, soulful eyes, Lena knew this stray wasn’t just any dog.
“I had my garage all the way open. I saw this little creature walk past, then jump straight into my car,” Lena told The Dodo.
Later named JD, he instantly warmed up to her—and even shook his head “No” when she asked him to get out.
The connection was immediate, and that night, Lena and her husband made a heartfelt decision: JD could stay in their garage.
JD’s rough appearance made Lena and her family suspect he had mange, so they didn’t want to take any risks. The very next morning, they took him to the vet—and were relieved to hear the best news!
It turned out JD didn’t have mange after all—just a bad skin allergy caused by fleas.

As soon as they knew JD wasn’t contagious, they welcomed him into their home.
Lena’s other dog, Bear, was a bit wary at first, keeping his distance. But JD’s new human siblings? They jumped straight into play mode!
It was clear from the start—JD had stolen everyone’s heart. Keeping him as part of the family felt like the greatest gift of all.

Within just a few weeks, JD was playing with his stuffies and bonding with his siblings as if he had always belonged. Even Bear eventually warmed up, officially welcoming JD into the pack!
With regular medicated baths, JD’s skin slowly healed until he fully recovered. Thanks to his “chosen” mom, he left his past behind and embraced his new life—happier and healthier than ever.
Still, JD’s favorite spot seems to be Lena’s car—just like the first day he arrived. He loves jumping in and lounging there, as if it’s his personal retreat.
And whenever the family heads out, JD is always first in line, ready to ride along on his next big adventure!

Of course, JD won’t say “No” to a cozy nap in a soft dog bed!
He loves lounging around, soaking up peaceful moments with his family. Though it took him some time to fully come out of his shell, JD now feels right at home in South Carolina—like he was always meant to be there.
“I feel like his personality has always been there, but in the beginning, he was definitely more laid back. Now, I feel accomplished,” Lena shared.
Once a stray searching for shelter, JD is now one of the luckiest, happiest pups around!
