Jannel and Robby, two dedicated volunteers from Houston, Texas, found Prima during their routine visit to a local park, where they regularly fed abandoned animals. She was curled up inside one of the shelters placed by Corridor Rescue to help strays survive the winter.
As Jannel looked closer, she realized something was wrong. Prima’s stomach was bloated, and she could barely move. Concerned, they rushed to check on her.
Approaching her kennel, they saw the heartbreaking reality—Prima was dangerously thin, her spine protruding beneath her fur. The swelling in her belly suggested advanced heartworm disease. When they offered her food and water, she hesitated at first but eventually accepted.

Realizing that Prima had little chance of surviving on her own, Jannel and Robby quickly reached out to Corridor Rescue. Without hesitation, the organization agreed to take her in, giving the fragile dog a fighting chance at recovery.
“I was shocked at what I saw when she stepped out. She was emaciated with a very large stomach. I immediately started making phone calls, knowing she needed rescue right away,” Jannel shared on Facebook.
With patience, they managed to coax Prima out of her shelter and gently load her into their car. During the ride to the rescue, she seemed to surrender completely. Though fearful and wary of humans, there was a quiet understanding in her eyes—as if she knew her rescuers meant no harm.

Determined to give her a fighting chance, the rescue team moved forward with the treatment. She was also placed on fluids, fed every few hours, and given essential antibiotics to support her fragile body.
Despite the odds, Prima began to show signs of improvement. Her swollen belly gradually went down, and she started to regain strength. Against all expectations, she fought through the treatment like a true warrior. As the heartworms slowly cleared from her system, it became clear—Prima was a survivor.
