Shelter staff understand how deeply their sweet residents long for a loving home and a family that will cherish them unconditionally. It’s every shelter pup’s greatest wish, and they can never fully thrive until it’s realized.
To help more shelter pups find their forever homes, the Metro East Humane Society hosts an adoption event every year on Black Friday, with adoption fees generously covered by the shelter’s sponsors.
This year’s event was the most successful yet. The shelter staff were thrilled when 94 animals, including 64 dogs, found their loving families.
While the other animals were happily embracing their new owners, there was one pup left standing alone—Frito, one of the shelter’s sweetest hearts.
Frito Gets Overlooked

When the shelter staff realized their sweet girl had been overlooked, they felt deeply disappointed.
“She’s such a lovely and deserving girl, so it was heartbreaking that no one came forward for her. We all know how special Frito is, and seeing so many people pass her by was tough,” Ali Hillard, the program manager, shared with The Dodo.

The shelter staff drove Frito back to the Madison County, Illinois shelter. As they entered, an eerie silence filled the air.
Once Frito realized she was the only one left, she gazed at her friends, her eyes filled with sadness.
Before they placed her back in her kennel, her shelter friends gently cradled Frito’s beautiful face in their hands. They cuddled her and kissed her goodnight, offering comforting words, assuring her that everything would be okay.

The next day, Frito showed her friends that she wasn’t going to let sadness take over. Though she didn’t have anyone to play with, she ran around the yard, having fun with her ‘imaginary friends,’ as the shelter staff described in a TikTok video.
Frito looked as happy as ever, joyfully running around with her stuffed animals in her mouth.
The shelter staff remain hopeful that sweet Frito will soon meet her forever family. She’s a wonderful pup who simply wants to enjoy life.

“Frito isn’t a picky girl at all. Her perfect forever home would be one that’s looking for a dog who’s both sweet and cuddly, while also being playful and silly,” Hillard said.
The shelter staff updated their TikTok followers, sharing that Frito has moved to a foster home and is absolutely loving it. She’s thrilled to finally experience the warmth and comfort of a real home.
Just like her friends at the Madison County shelter, we’re all rooting for Frito to find her forever home soon. This sweet pup truly deserves to be showered with boundless love and care.
