Shelter staff understand how much their lovable residents dream of finding a caring home and a family who will cherish them. Every shelter pup longs for this, and their happiness isn’t complete until that dream becomes reality.
To help more shelter pups find their forever homes, the Metro East Humane Society hosts an annual Black Friday adoption event, with sponsors generously covering the adoption fees.
This year’s event was the most successful yet, bringing pure joy to the shelter staff as 94 animals—64 of them dogs—found loving families.
While many pets were showering their new owners with love, one pup remained alone—Frito, a shelter favorite still waiting for a home.
Frito Gets Overlooked

When the shelter staff noticed that their sweet girl had been overlooked, they couldn’t hide their disappointment.
“She is such a lovely and deserving girl, so it was heartbreaking that no one came forward for her. We all know how special Frito is, and watching so many people pass her by was truly upsetting,” said Ali Hillard, the program manager, in an interview with The Dodo.

The shelter staff brought Frito back to the shelter in Madison County, Illinois. As they stepped inside, an eerie silence filled the space.
Realizing she was the only one left, Frito gazed around, her eyes filled with sadness as she searched for the friends who were no longer there.
Before settling her into her kennel, the shelter staff gently cradled Frito’s sweet face in their hands. They hugged her, kissed her goodnight, and whispered reassurances, letting her know that she was loved and that her forever home would come soon.

The next day, Frito proved to her friends that she wasn’t going to let sadness weigh her down. Even without a playmate, she raced around the yard, joyfully entertaining herself with what the shelter staff affectionately called her “imaginary friends” in a TikTok video.
With a stuffed animal clutched in her mouth, Frito looked as happy as ever, embracing life with her playful spirit.
The shelter staff remains hopeful that this sweet, spirited pup will soon find her forever family—one that will cherish her boundless joy and love.

“Frito is really not a picky girl. Her ideal forever home would be any home looking for a dog who is the perfect mix of sweet and cuddly while also being super silly and playful,” Hillard shared.
In a heartwarming update, the shelter staff announced on TikTok that Frito has moved to a foster home—and she’s loving every moment of it. Finally, she gets to experience the warmth and comfort of a real home.
