With Owner Gone, His Two Heartbroken Dogs Had No Idea How To Move On

Like humans, dogs struggle to cope with the departure of their family members. It may take days or even months for them to adjust, and even then, they need a compassionate approach and plenty of understanding.

A heartbreaking story unfolded in Nuevo, California, where two dogs lost their owner to a long-term illness. Devastated, they spent days huddled together on a couch, overwhelmed with confusion and grief.

Their situation seemed hopeless until a compassionate group of rescuers stepped in to give them the care and guidance they desperately needed.

A Sorrowful Sight

A woman named Doreen contacted Hope For Paws about Debby and Gidget – the two dogs left behind by her friend who passed away.

Even with her best interest at heart, Doreen wasn’t able to help the canines on her own, as they were just too shy and scared to come out.

Katie McKittrick and Alex Babcock, of HFP, drove two hours outside of Los Angeles, but they eventually arrived at the said spot.

Doreen explained to them that the dogs wouldn’t come out of the house. She tried to lure them with some food and treats, but they would always wait for her to leave the spot and then go out to pick up the food.

Given the circumstances, their behavior was completely understandable, explained Alex and Katie. Both Debby and Gidget were clearly still in shock from their loss and would need time to begin trusting again.

When the rescuers carefully entered the house, they found the dogs huddled together on the couch. Their expressions revealed deep fear, and despite the gentle approach, they refused to move.

Katie cautiously approached the dogs, using a gentle snare to secure them both with care and patience.

Once the challenging part was over, the rescuers placed each dog in a separate crate and loaded them into the car. Doreen, overwhelmed with gratitude, thanked the compassionate team for arriving just in time to save Debby and Gidget’s lives.

Learning How To Trust Again

After receiving initial care and checkups, Debby and Gidget were welcomed by the L.A. Animal Rescue team, who offered to foster them until a loving forever home could be found.

Initially, both dogs were wary of any interaction, but with time and patience, they began to come out of their shells.

As their true personalities emerged, their fosters noticed that Gidget naturally took on the role of pack leader. Debby, on the other hand, stayed close to her sister at all times, relying on Gidget as her protector and source of comfort. Their bond was unbreakable, showcasing the deep connection they shared.

“Gidget is the more protective one of the pair. She’s the pack leader and naturally takes charge. She’s more vocal and hands-on but incredibly sweet and affectionate. Once she warms up to you, she loves giving kisses and snuggling,” the HFP team shared on their website.

After months in their foster home, Debby and Gidget blossomed into the sweetest lovebugs. They fully adjusted to their new environment, showing clear signs that they were ready to meet their forever families.

When the time comes, there’s no doubt that these two will bring immense joy to the lucky families who welcome them into their lives!
